It began as a single
day event
featuring a small sailboat race...
...NOW,
it is the largest, most highly regarded sailing regatta on Lake
Champlain.
Originating in 1978, the Mayor's Cup Regatta was organized by the Valcour Sailing Club. When the regatta outgrew the Valcour Sailing Club, the Sunrise Rotary Club took over and has been organizing the regatta since 1997. Approximately 90-100 or more boats participate, depending on the weather.
Competitors of the Mayor's Cup Regatta hail from New York, New England, Pennsylvania and Canada (particularly Montreal) and sailing clubs on Lake Champlain. Montreal skipper, Peter Hall, winner of the 2008 Mayor's Cup, is also a past Canada National Sailing Champion and a World Sailing Champion in two different classes.
